Asda, Tesco and Morrisons face Mars Bar shortage due to 'high demand'

Multiple major UK supermarkets have been hit with a shortage of one of the countries most beloved chocolate bars following supply issues and an increase in demand.

Asda, Tesco and Morrisons shoppers have found gaps on the shelves and 'out of stock' messages for Mars Bars on a few of the supermarkets websites, as some retailers have warned of low stock.

Mars Wrigley, owners of Mars Bars, Snickers, Bounty and Milky Way, said that the shortages have been caused by "high levels of demand" but have reassured customers that their favourite chocolate treats are still available.

It is the latest treat to face low stock levels, following major food shortages in the UK that have been caused by various factors, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine, production issues and soaring wholesale costs.

As of today, multipacks of Mars Bars are currently showing 'out of stock' messages at several major retailers. A four pack of the chocolate bars were currently unavailable at Asda, with an eight pack being out of stock over on the Morrisons website.

Tesco reportedly experienced shortages at the start of the week, with a 4 pack of Mars Bars being unavailable on Monday, but they look to be available once more as of today.

Waitrose, Ocado and Sainsbury's were all fully stocked with multipacks of Mars Bars online.

And it's not just supermarkets being hit with the shortages, as Scots chippies have found themselves unable to serve the iconic deep fried Mars Bar to customers.

The owner of the Clam Shell takeaway on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, Joe Andreucci told The Telegraph : “We buy from Cash & Carry wholesalers and we currently have no stock today because we couldn’t get them. We think there is a shortage.”

One major retailer spoke to The Guardian and said: "It looks like a production issue on Mars’s end may be causing gaps across retailers”.

The newspaper visited a handful of Tesco stores across The UK where they found empty chocolate bar shelves at the Walthamstow, north London store, with a next day delivery expected for September 10.

A Camden store was also found to be sold out of Snickers Duo, while white chocolate Twix bars were out of stock until an expected delivery date of 9 September.

A spokesman for Mars Wrigley said: “We are experiencing high levels of demand on a number of our treats.

“We are producing significant quantities and want to reassure the British public that our much-loved brands are still available nationwide.”

Tesco declined to comment on the shortages.
