An Asda shopper has revealed how they were able to slash their grocery bill by a staggering £40 after spotting certain labels on store shelves.
The supermarket regular was on his weekly shop when he noticed the "Asda Reward" signs on some product shelves, which ask you to download their app. The service encourages shoppers to buy targeted products to get money back, which can be converted to store vouchers.
Branded with the phrase "pounds, not points", the labels say customers who use the app can get "10 per cent off in your Asda cash rewards cash pot". While this discount applies on some groceries, "Super Star" products give an even better deal, which this shopper used make an impressive saving.
As reported by Yorkshire Live, the shopper said: "After I downloaded the app I noticed the 'Star Products' labels on various shelves. Sometimes they were hidden, for example an 'out of stock' label might be covering up a product label if it hadn't been changed by a member of staff.
"Other times, I'd be stood weighing up whether to buy one product or the other when I would check the app and realise that one of them was offering credit back on the purchase.
"For instance I was trying to buy some cola cans and they had £2.50 back on Coke Zero, but weren't offering anything on Pepsi despite being a similar price per can. So I ditched the Pepsi and bought just under £30 worth of Coke Zero, which instantly gave me £7.50 in my wallet.
"Of course it wouldn't be worth it if the product you switch to is more expensive, but where the price was the same for the same size, I followed the 'rewards' labels on the shelves. In the space of about two or three big shops I had £40 to spend in store."
The shopper then turned the £40 credit into a voucher on the app and used it at the till to get their £52 haul reduced to just £12.98 to pay. He added: "I'm already back up to £5.50 on the app. It's more generous than other supermarkets, and I get another 1 per cent cashback by paying on a Chase card."
Asda's Rewards top ticks right now is offering £3.50 back if you buy 30 cans of Diet Coke for £12.50. A 70cl bottle of Jack Daniels is £25, but shoppers get £8 back in their "cashpot". If you bought four bottles for £100, you'd get £32 back.
Asda's Rewards Scheme says: "Explore 100's of Star Products and start earning today. Purchase any of our Star Products and you’ll receive an instant Cashpot boost equivalent to 10 per cent of the product’s price. Super Stars give you even more!"
Of course, it's possible some deals won't be good value, as they may still be available cheaper elsewhere or have had price increases, so it isn't always better to buy the app-cashback products.
But as the cost of living continues to bite, many families are looking at the different ways they can make their money last and if you're buying the products anyway, you might as well get the vouchers to spend!
The Asda Rewards app can be downloaded on Google and Android devices and can be used instore or online.
