ASDA praised for adding 'brilliant' aisle, and Aldi is in talks to do the same

Supermarket giant ASDA has been heaped with praise for launching a new type of aisle in its stores. Shoppers have called the initiative 'brilliant', and have thanked the retailer for being so forward thinking.

As the Grocery Gazette reported, Asda is planning to launch new "Ukrainian aisles" at its UK retail branches. The initiative aims to support Ukraine's manufacturing sector following Putin's invasion and the ongoing war.

It will see food brands from the country represented in-store at Asda along with special "Made in Ukraine" tags. Aldi is reportedly also in talks to unveil a similar initiative, with shoppers calling for Tesco Waitrose and Lidl to follow suit.

Discussing the news on a Reddit thread, shoppers revealed how impressed they were with Asda's decision, calling it a "great idea". Many of those involved in the discussion also called on other supermarkets to follow suit with their own shelves.

Reddit user @GriselbaFishfinger commented "Cracking idea! Can Tesco and Waitrose do the same please?" in response to the news. A second added: "Need Ukrainian stuff in the middle of Lidl".

Both replies were met with agreement from others, with each racking up a number of upvotes - Reddit's version of 'likes'. A third user commented: "Hopefully others will catch on. I'm sure this will be a great success for asda!"

A fourth said: "I emailed Tesco about this and never got a response. I will switch to Asda from now on buy all the UA goods as alternatives. FU Tesco for ignoring this obvious and great idea."

User @Particular_Grocery22, whose bio describes them as "A Ukrainian living in Canada and trying to make sense out of life", also left a message in the thread. It read: "This is so beautiful and important. Not just showing love and support for our manufacturers - that is lovely in itself. If Ukrainian refugees can afford to go to the store they will be greeted by the welcome sight of the foods they know and love. A huge heartwarming moment. Thank you so much, dear friends!"

Asda's new "Ukrainian shelves" initiative is the result of a partnership between the major supermarket and Ucare - a specialist project led by leaders of the Ukrainian food market - as well as various food producers and government agencies. Producers who've signed up already include tea brand Yogoda and poultry supplier Myronivsky Hliboproduct.
