The cost of living crisis continues to bite at our bank accounts and, if there is one place we have all noticed it more than others, it has been on the weekly supermarket trip.
Shoppers have faced significantly higher costs on everyday essentials such as milk, bread, butter, olive oil and poultry when they are picking up their weekly groceries. Add on the fact that shoppers are now expected to face a £533 increase on their annual grocery bills due to rising inflation rates, it is understandable why so many are looking for ways to save some of their hard-earned cash.
Luckily, quite a few major supermarkets across the country have been helping families out this year by launching many promotions and deals to help with soaring costs across the board.
From deals that can help kids and adults eat for less to revamping own-branded value ranges, there are a variety of ways that shoppers can take the stress - and added costs - out of their supermarket trip.
Here is how Iceland, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury's are helping families keep costs low during the cost of living crisis.
Iceland
- 10% off for over 60s
- £30 voucher for pensioners
- Christmas Bonus Card Savings
Iceland is currently offering any of their shoppers over the age of 60 a 10% discount on their overall food bills when they are in any Iceland and Food Warehouse store across Scotland. The deal is available every Tuesday and eligible customers need to show proof of ID at the checkout, which could be a passport, driving license or a buss pass.
The frozen foods supermarket giant is also offering a £30 voucher to any pensioners who currently receive the state pension benefit, until September 16 this year. The chain has said that anyone over the age of 60 can combine the £30 voucher and the 10% discount on Tuesdays to bring costs down even further.
And, if you are planning for Christmas a bit earlier this year, then Iceland has launched their Christmas Bonus Card Savings earlier than usual. Shoppers who save £100 or more to their Bonus Card between now and August 31 will be able to receive a £15 bonus from Iceland on November 24 - perfectly in time for the Christmas shop.
The extra bonus can then be spent in-store at Iceland and The Food Warehouse, or online through an order via the Iceland app up until the day before Christmas Eve, Friday, December 23.
Asda
- Kids Eat For £1
- Just Essentials Range
- Price Lock on Thousands of Products
- Asda Rewards App
- Essential Living Hub
- Home Bargains Price Match
Asda has launched numerous ways that can help households keep costs low this year, including extending the popular Kids Eat For £1 deal in all Scots Asda cafe's. The deal will now run for the rest of the year and will allow any children under the age of 16 to grab a meal for just £1, with no minimum spend for an adult meal being required.
The supermarket also launched their revamped budget value brand Just Essentials, which replaced their iconic Smart Price range earlier this year. Considered to be the "biggest every budget-friendly range", it compromises nearly 300 products such as fresh fruit and veg, ready meals, cupboard staples and meat and fish.
Alongside their new range is the Essential Living Hub, which allows shoppers access to a range of handy hints, tips and hacks that can help them extend their budget and make the weekly shopping go that bit further.
There is also their massive "Price Drop and Lock" campaign which has seen 100 essential products such as tea bags, rice and cheese dropped in price for the rest of the year.
Additionally, Asda has also launched their first ever rewards app for shoppers. The Asda Rewards App which allows shoppers to earn rewards on any in store and online purchase. Shoppers can build up their online "cashpot" which can then be used to redeem money off.
And, that is not all, as the supermarket chain recently took aim at one of the biggest budget retailers with their Home Bargains Price Match campaign earlier this year. It means shoppers will now be able to pick up more than 100 items that are priced at the same price - or even lower - as the budget retailer.
Tesco
- Kids Eat Free
- Clubcard Prices
- Aldi Price Match
Tesco is giving away a free kids meal to Clubcard holders with any item purchased in all of its cafe's across Scotland. The deal will be available until August 26, and it covers meals including Kids Breakfast, Kids Hot Meal Deal and Kids Cold Pick and Mix Deal.
Additionally, the supermarket chain has also launched their Delivery Saver Schemes which start out as less than £3 per month - cheaper than a trip to the supermarket in petrol prices. The cheapest plan begins at £2.49 a month, and shoppers will be able to choose as and when they'd like to collect their shop, on orders over £25 with the Anytime Click+Collect plan. The next monthly tariff is £4.99 for the Off Peak Delivery Plan, this includes a £25 minimum for click-and-collect and a £40 minimum basket price for home delivery.
Since early 2020, Tesco has been offering shoppers lower costs with their Aldi Price Match Campaign both in stores and online. The campaign has seen hundreds of products dropped in price to match those in the popular budget supermarket. However, there have been reports that the supermarket has been cutting down their campaign recently.
Morrisons
- Kids Eat Free
- Mid Week Meals for Under £5
- My Morrisons Rewards App
Morrisons currently has a Kids Eat For Free offer that is valid at all of their cafe's across Scotland with any purchased adult meal that is priced at £4.99 or over. The deal is available for any children under the age of 16 and youngsters can also receive a piece of fruit and Tropicana Kids Orange or Apple drink or bottle of water.
Moreover, they have also launched their 'Meal of the Day' offer on a range of teatime favourites priced at under a fiver throughout the entire week. The deal will be available every weekday from 3pm onwards and it will see a 'Daily Special' item on the menu discounted to £4.99.
In addition, Morrisons also revamped their My Morrisons App in a bid to help customers keep their grocery bills down by offering personalised discounts and vouchers. There will also be a brand new feature, the 'Surprise Offer' on items such as flowers for Mother's Day and any treats and snacks during Halloween.
M&S
- Kids Eat Free
- Free Fruit for Kids
- £20 off first grocery shop via Ocado
Kids can eat for free in any M&S cafe across Scotland when customers spend £5 or more on a single transaction on food or drink for adults. The offer has been extended until Friday, September 2, and will let kids tuck into popular dishes such as pancakes with blueberries & honey for breakfast, a ham & cheese toastie and cheese & tomato pizza for lunch, as well as sandwich and roll options.
The supermarket has also reportedly given away 35,000 pieces of free fruit in their cafes at the start of August and are expected to give away around 200,000 pieces by the end of the summer.
If you get your M&S shop online via Ocado, then you can save £20 off your first order via the online retailer by signing up here. The minimum spend required is £60 and shoppers can claim the discount by entering the provided code at the online checkout. The deal is available until September 9, 2022.
Sainsbury's
- Feed your family for a fiver
- Price Lock Campaign
- Aldi Price Match Campaign
Sainsbury's shoppers can get some tips on feeding the family for less with the supermarket's "Feed Your Family for a fiver" campaign, which consists of budget-friendly meals that are all under £4. The meals include favourites such as Thai green curry, chilli con carne and beef kebabs.
Similar to Asda, the supermarket has also dropped and locked the prices across thousands of their products both online and in store. It means that prices will not increase across certain products for eight weeks from the date of being reduced.
Sainsbury's also have their own Aldi Price Match Campaign which they say has a total of 250 products that are matched with the German discounter.
Top Cashback members can also get access to £10 back when they spend £40 via the online website for the first ever time. The offer is available until tomorrow, Wednesday, August 17, and is only available for one purchase per household.
