Asda has doubled the size of its toilet rolls in an effort to reduce the amount of cardboard and plastic needed to produce them.
The supermarket hopes that the change will remove 74 tonnes of plastic and save 760 tonnes of cardboard a year in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint.
Asda says it is the first UK supermarket to change all of its own brand toilet rolls to a new FSC accredited double length roll.
The toilet rolls will be made from 30% recycled content and will even include a new pack size on the customer favourite "quilts and coconut" fragranced packs.
They will be available in-store and online from today (Monday, November 14).
Asda has doubled the amount of toilet paper per roll, while reducing the number of rolls per pack.
The change will significantly reduce the supermarkets cardboard and plastic usage, but also remove more than 1,200 lorries from the road every year.
Customers will also benefit from the change, as purchasing the products means they’ll be reducing their environmental impact too.
And for anyone looking to go that extra mile, Asda’s toilet roll plastic packaging is recyclable at over 150 Asda stores.
It means shoppers can simply bring their packaging to one of Asda’s plastic bags and wrappings recycling points at the front of the store to do their own recycling.
Sarah Yorke, Buying Manager – Household Paper, at Asda, said: “Shades toilet rolls are one of our most popular own-brand products so to be able to make this change and help reduce both our customers and our own carbon footprint without affecting the great quality of our product in any way is an incredibly important step for us.”
Sizes include a multipack of two double rolls - this will equal the same amount of toilet roll sold in Asda’s original four-pack toilet rolls.
The packs will also display Asda’s support for Bowel Cancer UK’s #GetOnARoll campaign, as the supermarket hopes to increase awareness by listing signs and symptoms of the condition on both their Shades and Just Essentials toilet roll packaging.
Customers can scan a QR code shown on the packaging for extra details.
Asda has also donated £50,000 to Bowel Cancer UK in an effort to help fund future initiatives to save lives and improve the quality of life of those affected by bowel cancer.
The toilet rolls will be available across all of Asda's existing lines.
