Spring storms often leave many without power and that can lead to some dangerous situations with electricity. Kentucky Utilities and Louisville Gas and Electric are reminding Kentuckians of the dangers of electricity. The utility has issued a list of safety tips for indoors, outdoors and during power outages. Spokesperson Daniel Lowry said an often-overlooked hazard is an extension cord.
Well, the big thing really is to check your extension cords. And any electrical cords. If they have worn spots, or frayed wires, that's where you need to replace those cords.”
Lowry also cautioned against putting multiple extension cords into one socket or connecting extension cords – and to only use electrical items outdoors that are marked for outdoor use. With the spring storm season not quite behind us, he offered this advice about downed lines for people trying to be a good neighbor and pick them up.
“You've got to assume that any of those wires could be energized and even the trees that are connecting it. If a tree limb is touching an energized lawn and that tree, any of those limbs can be energized.”
Lowry said the safest thing to do is call 9-1-1 – and let the experts pick them up.
