From the editor

“Whether you’re looking for a five-minute freshen-up (hello, hand towels!) or a full renovation, we have over 200 ideas, tips, tricks and buys to get your going.”

Elle Lovelock, editor-in-chief, Home Beautiful

Our September issue is dedicated to Australia’s most stylish TV and sports stars, who welcomed us into their homes. What a treat to walk in the shoes of The Block Judge, Darren Palmer and host Shelley Craft to see how they put into reality the design and decor ideas they’re always encouraging reality reno contestants to embrace.

For a fresh dose of home inspiration, browse Elle’s Editor’s Choice selection this month on Home Beautiful Shop – . And, if you’re in the mood for shopping, see our round-up of the latest homewares releases for decorating inspiration.

Darren Palmer and his husband Olivier Duvillard have just completed a major renovation on their Bondi home, which spanned the past couple of years. They enjoy spending time in the coastal home, now a spacious retreat, with their teenage son. Here the couple relax with their French Bulldog, Frankie, and Brussels Griffon, Razzie.

Krissy and her husband Johnny have a home where people are encouraged to drop in and gather. “From the outside, it feels grand, but as soon as you come in, it feels very relaxed. I think it’s the way we’ve furnished it and the fact that you’ve got four dogs running around your feet. That’s the most important thing for me,” says Krissy.

Even before they rose to fame on The Block: Fans vs Faves in 2014, Kyal and Kara Demmrich loved the process of taking something dilapidated and breathing new life into it. “Mostly for us, it’s all about the transformation,” says Kara. “We love the satisfaction of the before and after.”

“Work out your goals, whether you’re renovating to live in the home or as an investment. This will dictate your budget. Then prioritise what’s important.”

Peek inside an interior designer’s fresh green bathroom

“It was leaking and very tired, so the aim was to improve the layout and freshen up the feel,” explains interior designer Sheila. (Credit: Photography: Rachael Lenehan )

In keeping with the garden views, green was a natural choice for the refreshing new colour scheme for this heritage bathroom update. The renovation was nothing from straightforward, however. Regional flooding and the old home’s quirks meant the bathroom took months rather than the anticipated weeks to complete. But the result was well worth the wait.
