Artist Soheila Sokhanvari honours the untold stories of Iran’s feminist icons

© France 24

As protests rage across Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, artists are posting images in support of freedom. In September, Iranians took to the streets after the 22-year-old died in police custody.  She’d been arrested for not covering her hair properly. Despite the Iranian government's attempts to shut the protests down, the amount of people taking part is increasing.

Alongside them, artists are putting their skills to work to amplify their voices. Iranian artist Soheila Sokhanvari’s exhibition “Rebel Rebel” at London's Barbican celebrates and commemorates feminist icons from pre-revolutionary Iran. She speaks to Eve Jackson about the battle for women's rights and an end to the regime. Also on the programme we see high profile women, such as Juliette Binoche and Marion Cotillard, cutting locks of hair in solidarity with Iran and we hear from Iranian painter Homa Arkani who told us why artists are such a threat to the regime.
