The 300 year old St Mary-le-Strand Church has had a new lease of life since the area around it, Strand Aldwych, was pedestrianised three years ago. Previously stuck on an island in the middle of the traffic – “Taxi drivers called us St Mary-in-the-way,” notes Priest-in-Charge Peter Babington – they are now set on restoration with this new lease of life, which is now being helped with a stunning new work of public art by Create London for Westminster City Council.
Manchester-based artist Louise Giovanelli was commissioned to create a large-scale work to engage with the Church and has created a huge image of a shimmering draped curtain to cover one entire side of the building.
