South Korean multimedia artist Julie H.C. portrays her personal journey navigating through ancestral nuances and individual autonomy during "Resonance", which is running at West Eden Gallery until Aug 10.
This is her first solo exhibition, featuring a series of mixed media works that analyse traditional textile history through the subversive lens of found object art, notably post-war assemblage that embraced discarded materials and rebirthed them into dynamic fresh narratives.
Through a contemporary aesthetic, the compositions are made up of found fabrics repurposed into sculptural shapes and forms, materials that ebb and flow with their own life force upon the canvas.
Working primarily with antique Jim Thompson textiles for this show, the artist shines light upon Thailand's handicraft heritage and silk legacy. The fabrics are all sourced from archival collections selected for their unique characteristics and engaging visual stories.
The fan incorporated in her work reflects her Korean origin, an item that expresses femininity yet was significant in old Korean culture as a symbol of status and a means for scholars to show the refinement of their work.
This exhibition is curated by Camilla Russell, a Thai-American with more than 15 years' experience in the commercial creative sector ranging from international auctions, art gallery management and hospitality.
