Artemis I rocket taking last road trip before Florida launch despite late lightning threat

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — NASA’s massive multibillion-dollar moon rocket is making its final terrestrial journey before its first celestial flight.

Artemis I, a combination of the Space Launch System, Orion capsule and mobile launcher, was scheduled to make the slow roll atop the crawler-transporter 2 from the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center overnight. Its first movement was delayed when a storm cell approached KSC putting the area under a lightning warning, but NASA officials planned to push through as early as 10 p.m. ET as the weather cleared.

NASA’s Artemis mission manager Mike Sarafin called the trip “the first 4 miles of NASA’s return to the moon.”
