Arsene Wenger sends Mohamed Salah contract warning to Liverpool as rumours intensify

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says Mohamed Salah signing a new contract at Liverpool will 'solve one problem' but 'create another'.

The Egyptian is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal to keep him at Anfield beyond 2023, but manager Jurgen Klopp revealed in a press conference this week he is 'happy' with the talks. He told reporters: "The decisive parties are talking to each other and that's all I need. That's it."

Elsewhere, Egypt's sports minister Ashraf Sobhi claims he met with the winger at an airport in Senegal following their World Cup qualifier defeat and revealed Salah 'intends to stay at Anfield'.

With rumours suggesting the Liverpool star is edging closer to putting pen to paper on a new deal, Wenger has issued some advice on handing players nearing 30 huge new contracts.

"It sorts one problem out and creates straight away another," he told beIN Sports. "You're sometimes in this position.

"You have to do the maximum to keep this player knowing that other players are not far from him, but there is not enough money anymore to satisfy him because you've spent too much on this one.

"He [Salah] has had an exceptional season and since he's come in, every year he's been better. He deserves his contract.

"The only thing is that once they are 30 years old, it's always how long do you sign then because you know the best paid is already over their peak."

As well as Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are also in the final 18 months of their Liverpool contracts and it can be expected that any deal handed to the Egyptian will have a knock-on effect on negotiations for the the pair.
