Arsenal trio and Man Utd pair among 15 players to win votes for FWA Footballer of the Year

Erling Haaland romped home to be crowned the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year with a massive 82 per cent of the vote.

But the Manchester City man was not the only star to be nominated for the award, with 14 other players also receiving votes. The FWA announced Haaland's win on Friday, with 800 of their members submitting ballots for the prestigious trophy.

Haaland led the way with his mammoth share of the vote, with Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka finishing as runner-up. Saka's team-mate Martin Odegaard came home in third place, having led the Gunners' title challenge as captain.

Kevin de Bruyne joined Haaland in the top four, with the City midfielder winning enough votes for fourth place. Marcus Rashford was rewarded for his stunning campaign for Manchester United with a fifth place finish in the FWA rankings.

The attacker has scored 16 goals in the Premier League this term and is well ahead in United's goal standings. The rankings for the rest of the nominees has not yet been released, though the Daily Mail has published all 15 players to have received votes.

As well as the five already mentioned, James Maddison is the standout name, seeing as he has been part of a Leicester team battling against relegation. Maddison has scored 10 goals and notched nine assists in the top-flight, though the Foxes sit 18th in the table.

Another surprise inclusion from among the relegation strugglers is Declan Rice, who is widely expected to leave West Ham this summer. The rest of the nominees all play for teams fighting at the top end of the table.

That includes Harry Kane, who has scored 26 goals for Tottenham in the Premier League this term, becoming the club's record scorer in the process. Granit Xhaka was a third Arsenal nomination amid his impressive turnaround.

Rashford meanwhile was joined by team-mate Casemiro, who has been a key player in midfield for the Red Devils. Mohamed Salah was the sole Liverpool representative following their poor campaign.

Newcastle skipper Kieran Tierney was one of two defenders to make the list, alongside City star John Stones. The final two players to receive votes were City's Rodri and Brighton's Moises Caciedo, with Haaland left overwhelmed by his win.

“To win the Football Writers’ Award in my first season in English football is an honour,” Haaland said. “I try every single day to be the best I can be, and to be recognised like this means a lot to me.

“Thank you to everyone who voted for me. It’s a real honour to have won this award. I am now focused on ensuring I finish the season as strongly as possible and helping City win trophies.”
