Unlike Germany and Argentina, Belgium were able to avoid a major World Cup upset as they beat Canada 1-0 in their opening game, despite riding their luck throughout the contest.
Canada were extremely impressive in the first half as they caused the Belgian defence to make a number of mistakes which included Yannick Carrasco conceding a penalty, although the spot-kick from Alphonso Davies was saved by former Chelsea man Thibaut Courtois.
Despite the pressure, Belgium took the lead through Michy Batshuayi, who fired home just before half time after latching onto a trademark Toby Alderweireld long ball and Roberto Martinez's side were able to hold off the Canadians for the second half to seal a World Cup group stage win.
