Arsenal transfer news: Jakub Kiwior arrival confirmed as Edu given £25m midfield opportunity

Here is your Arsenal transfer roundup on Tuesday, January 24.

Kiwior transfer announced

Arsenal have confirmed their second January signing with the transfer of Jakub Kiwior from Spezia for a fee in the region of £21million.

The Polish international arrives for an initial fee of £17.5million with a potential further £3.5million in add ons. His contract will last until 2027 with the option to extend for a further year.

Signing Kiwior makes perfect sense for Arsenal considering first-choice centre-halves Gabriel and William Saliba have started all 19 league matches this term, something that could potentially lead to burnout in the latter stages of the campaign.

The 22-year-old, who started all four of Poland's World Cup fixtures, is also capable of playing left-back and as a holding midfielder.

The talented defender played 17 Serie A matches during the first half of Spezia's 2022/23 campaign, averaging an impressive 1.62 blocks, 1.5 interceptions and 1.37 tackles per 90 minutes this term, as per fbref.

Mckennie option

Arsenal may have an answer to their ongoing demand for new midfielders. Having spent a large portion of the summer chasing Youri Tielemans they moved onto Douglas Luiz at Aston Villa late on before heading into the season with Thomas Partey as their main defensive midfielder, supported by Mohamed Elneny and Albert Sambi Lokonga.

Juventus' Weston McKennie has been sounded out and offered across Europe previously but the financial and legal position that the Old Lady finds itself in doesn't make for good reading. There could be a chance for Arsenal to take advantage of this too, with Gazzetta writing that he would be available for as little as £25m before the end of the window.

The American midfielder has been utilised across the field under Massimo Allegri this season, including in an unorthodox winger position that he played against England at the World Cup to good effect. McKennie's skillset is suited to other areas though and Juventus need extra attackers, meaning that cashing in on their 24-year-old asset has become an option to increase funds.

If an opportunity does arise in the final days of the window then it wouldn't be a surprise to see Arsenal trying to strike whilst the iron is hot and getting involved in the future of McKennie.

Ivan Fresneda decision

Arsenal will be hoping to secure January arrival number three in the form of Ivan Fresneda after the Gunners confirmed the transfer of Jakub Kiwior days after securing a move for Leandro Trossard.

18-year-old Ivan Fresneda, currently playing at Real Valladolid, after being at Real Madrid's academy, is a great fit for Arteta as he is able to come inside into midfield seamlessly.

He has attracted attention from Newcastle as well as other top European clubs but it is Arsenal that are at the front of the queue alongside Borussia Dortmund in the race for his signature. According to the Athletic things are progressing well and a decision on his next move is expected soon.

Dortmund themselves have become one of the best developers of young players but Arsenal's form has given them a serious chance of snatching up one of Europe's rising stars and it gives Fresneda a big choice to make. If Arsenal could get one over Dortmund this month and then make a push for Bellingham in the summer they will be a serious force to contend with.
