Arsenal told they will only be title contenders if one thing happens to Manchester City

After eight games of the season, Arsenal appear to be making an unlikely title tilt. The Gunners have won seven matches so far this season and will go back to the top of the Premier League table if they defeat Liverpool on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta's side have been knocked off top spot after Manchester City defeated Southampton 4-0 to continue their unbeaten start to the campaign. City are heavy favourites to win the Premier League for the fifth time in six seasons, even though Arsenal have more than matched them in the campaign's early stages.

If any team is going to battle City for the title this season, Arsenal are best placed to do it. There are question marks over Spurs' pragmatic style under Antonio Conte, while Chelsea and Manchester United are currently some way off the pace.

However, Graeme Souness believes the only position Arsenal will be battling for is second spot. Even though the Gunners have a better points per game than City, Souness believes Arsenal will only become title contenders if Pep Guardiola's side suffers an injury crisis.

"They will only be challengers if City have an absolute nightmare run with injuries, and I think that applies to everybody else behind City," Souness told Sky Sports.

"People are playing for second place as long as City don't have a disaster with injuries. That's how good they are."

Manchester City beat Southampton 4-0 yesterday to claim top spot in the league, which now forces Arsenal to pick up all three points today against Liverpool to reclaim first place.
