Arsenal should repeat Sol Campbell transfer trick to sign perfect Bukayo Saka backup

Arsenal starlet Bukayo Saka has established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League this season.

Saka has netted 13 goals and provided a further 11 assists in the league this term, hugely impressive numbers when you consider he is still just 21-years-old. That kind of form has seen him rewarded with a new bumper contract, with the 21-year-old set to extend his current deal at the Emirates Stadium, football.london understands.

The talented winger is understood to have already filmed some promotional material ahead of the deal. It is thought that it is a matter of when and not if the extension is confirmed.

For all the good he has done this season, the England international has understandably looked slightly tired in recent times. Saka has played 2955 minutes out of a possible 3150 in the league this term, with Mikel Arteta clearly not trusting any other members of his squad on the right flank.

Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and Reiss Nelson all favour the left wing, cutting in on their favoured right feet whilst Saka is a left-footed playing on the opposite side. So it is time to bring in another left-footer to take some of the burden away from the Hale End academy graduate.

One player that makes a lot of sense is Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Dejan Kulusevski, a signing that would be controversial for many reasons. The last player to infamously swap Spurs for Arsenal was Sol Campbell, a move that whilst very successful for the Gunners did not go down well with their north London rivals. But this move would be very different.

Kulusevski technically remains a Juventus player, currently on loan with the north Londoners and according to transfer guru Nicolo Schira, Tottenham still haven't made up their mind regarding a potential permanent move. The Swedish international's move to N17 included an option to buy, with certain conditions potentially upgrading it to an obligation.

However, Spurs' lack of UEFA Champions League qualification means these conditions won't be met. The Lillywhites of course retain the option to make the move a permanent one but Schira has reported that talks have now stalled. This is where Arsenal should come in.

Despite his slightly underwhelming campaign, Kulusevski is still just 23 years old, with plenty of time to develop his game. Mikel Arteta has previously shown his ability to further the game of his wingers, as evidenced by the development of Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

In 1898 Premier League minutes, Kulusevski has notched two goals and six assists whilst playing in a fairly defensive system devoid of attacking ideas. The Gunners have also been linked Bayer Leverkusen attacker Moussa Diaby for the right-wing position but he is likely to command a much higher fee than Kulusevski, who will cost Spurs £31million if they do decide to sign him permanently.

This would therefore give Arsenal extra cash to strengthen elsewhere in their squad, with Arteta keen to bring in at least one midfielder at the end of the current campaign, football.london understands.
