Arsenal's goal vs Leicester City was correctly disallowed but review exposes VAR inconsistency

It turned out to be a decision that didn't prove too costly, but Leandro Trossard's disallowed goal against Leicester City has left some Arsenal supporters in a state of confusion.

The £21m January signing from Brighton & Hove Albion thought he had broken the deadlock in the 26th minute after picking out the top corner from just inside the box. However, following a VAR check and referee Craig Pawson reviewing the goal on the pitchside screen, it was decided that the goal wasn't allowed to stand.

As explained by the Premier League on Twitter, Ben White was the cause after committing a foul: "Leandro Trossard has the ball in the net for Arsenal, but after consulting VAR, referee Craig Pawson has overturned the goal because of sustained holding from Ben White on Danny Ward in the build-up."

A decision that left Gary Lineker, a Leicester fan, breathing a huge sigh of relief: "Arsenal have had a goal ruled out after a VAR intervention," he wrote on Twitter. "As a Leicester fan, I feel relieved, but bemused by a decision that could not be described, under any circumstances, as a clear and obvious error."

In truth, as a ruling from 2016 states: 'A player may not shield the ball if it is not in playing distance. For example, if a player stands in front of the goalkeeper on a corner kick, and then moves to prevent the goalkeeper getting around them, this should be called as impeding' Arsenal can have no complaints.

Furthermore, as per the 'IFAB Laws of the Game 2022-23': 'A player may shield the ball by taking a position between an opponent and the ball if the ball is within playing distance and the opponent is not held off with the arms or body. If the ball is within playing distance, the player may be fairly charged by an opponent.'

However, it's been pointed out by supporters on social media that a similar goal was allowed to stand against Arsenal earlier in the season as Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz scored directly from a corner to equalise for the visitors at the Emirates Stadium in the 74th minute.

Aaron Ramsdale certainly felt he was being impeded by Villa midfielder Boubacar Kamara on the goal-line which ultimately prevented him from keeping out the effort that flew straight in and upon a closer look at the replays, the Gunners goalkeeper's complaints were justified.

But following a VAR check the goal was given. Of course, the incident - just like at the King Power Stadium at the weekend - ultimately didn't matter too much in the end as Gabriel Martinelli, ironically in both games scored what turned out to be the winner, but it exposes the inconsistencies with regard to Arsenal.
