This time Arsenal really celebrated like they had won the league.
Deep into the sixth minute of injury time, Alexandre Lacazette helped snatch the most dramatic of victories to put Arsenal firmly in the hunt for fourth place.
Lacazette had looked like a player who had forgotten to score, he wasted so many openings and yet ultimately his effort sent the Emirates wild in celebration.
Two weeks ago, Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves claimed Arsenal celebrated their win at Molineux as if they had won the league which definitely added spice to the re-arranged rematch.
And when the final whistle blew after a tetchy and often bad-tempered match, Arsenal’s players, fans and Mikel Arteta lost all of their inhibitions after what felt like a big moment in the battle for fourth.
It was eventually credited as an own goal to Wolves keeper Jose Sa who defected Lacazette’s shot into the net which is a shame as the Arsenal captain had not scored since Boxing Day and no one wants an own goal.
Incredibly, Wolves had not lost any of their previous 45 Premier League matches after opening the scoring and for so long, they looked as if that record would stay intact.
But after Wolves forward Hwang Hee-chan had been gifted a tenth-minute opener by Arsenal defender Gabriel’s horrible mistake, the visitors dug in, defended heroically and looked as if they would take all three points.
To lose in those circumstances was heartbreaking and felt tough on Wolves and their travelling fans because Bruno Lage’s men have been such a breath of fresh air this season.
But they crumbled at the death as Nicolas Pepe grabbed an 82nd-minute equaliser and it was his assist that set up Lacazette’s late winner.
Arsenal’s fans went from despair to delirium and Arteta went from jumping up and down on the touchline to taping around in joy.
For so long it was a painful, torturous night for Arsenal because they started so badly. Gabriel played a back pass without looking, Hee-chan nipped in, rounded Aaron Ramsdale and the Wolves forward was able to slot the ball into an empty net.
Wolves went so close to making it 2-0 just after half time when another Hee-chan effort agonisingly rolled along the goal line. But Arsenal really piled on the pressure and Wolves defence, brilliantly marshalled by Conor Coady, did well to hold out until the 82nd minute.
They found a way through thanks to their substitutes as Eddie Nketiah broke down the right, pulled back a cross to his fellow substitute Pepe who fired home.
The roof came off the Emirates and Arsenal’s fans were delirious at the idea of snatching a point - but then it got even better for the home supporters.
Pepe’s ball forward found Lacazette and his shot was deflected into the net by Sa’s fateful hand. What a finish and boost for Arsenal’s top-four chances. Now they might believe and their spirit might just carry them home.
