Arsenal will return with a fresh approach for Manchester United striker Alessia Russo this summer after failing to sign her in January.
The Gunners had two offers rejected for Russo in the last transfer window, with the second of those believed to be a world-record bid of around £500,000.
Arsenal’s interest in the England striker, however, has not faded and they will try to tempt her away from Manchester United this summer.
The Gunners have made it a priority to bolster their forward line for next season and are also tracking Benfica’s Cloe Lacasse.
Russo’s current contract is due to expire at the end of this month and she is yet to agree fresh terms on a new one.
United, who finished second and above Arsenal in the Women’s Super League this season, are desperate to keep her and talks are ongoing.
The Gunners are ready to swoop, though, if Russo opts to leave and they are in pole position to sign her. Barcelona and Lyon have been credited with an interest in the 24-year-old, but it is thought she would prefer to continue playing in the WSL.
Russo was named in England’s World Cup squad on Wednesday and is expected to lead the line for the Lionesses this summer at the tournament in Australia and New Zealand.
The striker finished the domestic season with 10 WSL goals to her name, with United missing out on the title to Chelsea on the final day of the season.
