Arsenal player ratings vs Manchester City as Jorginho superb but Tomiyasu and Gabriel poor

Aaron Ramsdale: Could do nothing about the goal and was largely excellent. Some brave ball play and an excellent save to keep out Gundogan. Superbly alert to bail out Zinchenko after he lost it to Haaland on the edge of the box. 8.

Takehiro Tomiyasu: The obvious error comes for the goal where he should have played the ball out instead of back, but Tomiyasu had been having an off day before that with his passing and marking. Recovered a little in the second half and was unlucky to deflect the second goal in, but you'd expect Ben White to return at Villa Park. 5.

William Saliba: A masterclass in how to handle Erling Haaland for the most part. Matched the Norwegian physically and refused to be intimidated. Could do little about either goal. 8.

Gabriel: Looked a little nervous in a few defensive duels and ended up on his backside on a couple of occasions. That carried into the second half where he was saved by an offside for a penalty and gave away the ball poorly for City's second. His worst game in some time. 5.

Oleksandr Zinchenko: Good in the first half and drifted infield to help in the tight midfield battle to good effect. His cross for Nketiah was a highlight. Looked a little complacent in the second though and was not as progressive with his passing. 6.

Jorginho: Many were nervous when it emerged that Thomas Partey would miss this game, but Jorginho showed what a smart buy he is. Efficient and composed on the ball while also being defensively really solid. A superb full debut from the Italian. 8.

Granit Xhaka: Got forward much more like he did earlier in the season, particularly in the first half. Faded in influence in the second half though and wasted a decent attacking opportunity. 6.

Martin Odegaard: Couldn't really get into the game as he would have wanted. A few decent passes but nowhere near his influential best. 5.

Bukayo Saka: Stepped up in the pressure moment to deliver a superbly taken penalty. Forced City to change their left back plans with his relentless running. 7.

Eddie Nketiah: Couldn't take his biggest opportunity of the night with a header in the first half. Really faded in influence the second half as Arsenal faded away. 5.

Gabriel Martinelli: Caused City a few problems in the first half but again faded in influence as the game went on. With Arsenal penned back there just wasn't much he could do to change things. 6.

Substitutes -

Leandro Trossard: Half decent shout for a penalty but not a huge amount of influence beside that. Like the attackers before him he struggled with the ball up the other end of the pitch. 6.

Fabio Vieira: Came on too late to influence the game. n/a.

Ben White: Came on too late to influence the game. n/a.
