Arsenal pay touching tribute to John Motson after legendary commentator passes away

Arsenal paid a touching tribute to John Motson after the legendary commentator passed away last week at the age of 77.

Motson, often known simply as 'Motty', had a wonderful 50-year career. He was well known for his work with the BBC, commentating on Match of the Day since 1971, covering almost 2,500 televised games - earning an OBE for his service to sports broadcasting in 2001.

Now, Arsenal have paid Motson a heartwarming homage, placing a placard with his name on it in the press box of the Emirates Stadium alongside a picture where he can be seen with a microphone.

Between 1979 and 2008 Motson was the BBC's voice on major finals, covering the World Cup, European Championship and the FA Cup. That run included his record-breaking sixth World Cup final in Berlin in 2006 and his 29th FA Cup final in 2008.

Tributes from some of football's most iconic figures immediately poured in after his death was announced. Liverpool legend Carragher tweeted: "RIP John Motson *heartbroken emoji*.

"An absolute Legend of the game. So many of us grew up listening to this man describe the action & goals on MOTD & cup finals. Sad loss."

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell echoed Carragher's tribute, posting: "Rest in Peace John “Motty” Motson an absolute legend and gentleman *love heart emoji* *praying emoji* *sad emoji*."
