Arsenal on course for £5.9m deal as Edu can begin process to generate funds with summer clearout

Arsenal have 29 players out on loan this season, so naturally, Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar will have some big decisions to make at the end of the season.

Some members of the loan army such as Folarin Balogun, Charlie Patino and Brooke Norton-Cuffy are being tipped to have bright futures with the north London outfit, although it remains to be seen if any will emulate William Saliba and be a part of the first-team picture next season.

Meanwhile, prior to injury, Nicolas Pepe was in fine form for OGC Nice and he alongside Nuno Tavares - on loan at Marseille - are among the several Arsenal loanees that can command a transfer fee this summer in the scenario that it's decided they don't feature in Arteta's plans.

But the one loanee whom the Gunners will almost certainly receive a fee for once the transfer window reopens is Pablo Mari as football.london understands that a £5.9million windfall is on the way - but only on the condition that Monza avoid being relegated from the top-flight of Italian football.

The Spaniard, who was actually Arteta's first signing as Arsenal head coach in January 2020 when he initially joined on loan from Brazilian side Flamengo, is spending the season with the Serie A newcomers and has more than played his part in their impressive campaign to date.

With that said, there was a scary moment back in October when he was stabbed during an attack in a Milan supermarket. After undergoing surgery to have two muscles repaired, Mari opened up on the ordeal.

"After the tough time we had yesterday, both my family and I want to communicate that thankfully we are all fine despite the circumstances and to thank all the messages of support and love we are receiving," he said, as per the Mirror. "In addition, we want to send condolences and all our strength to the relatives and friends of the deceased person, and we sincerely wish that all injured people recover as soon as possible."

But just two months, well 56 days to be precise, after the incident Mari returned to action and has been ever-present for Monza in Serie A since the campaign resumed after the World Cup break, starting as the central defender in a back three in a 2-2 draw against Inter Milan and the shock 2-0 win over Juventus away from home.

However, after going seven games unbeaten in the league post-World Cup, Monza did have a mini blip by losing at home to reigning champions AC Milan before crashing to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Salernitana last weekend.

Not that results were too costly in the grand scheme of things, but they did get back on track on Saturday afternoon by beating Empoli at home and as things stand they are sitting 14 points clear of the drop zone, meaning it would take a pretty spectacular collapse on their behalf to be relegated.

Therefore, Arsenal remain on course to secure a £5.9m windfall and having already prepared for Mari's seemingly inevitable permanent departure by signing Jakub Kiwior from Spezia in the January window, very soon Edu, the club's sporting director, can begin the process of trimming the first-team squad even further.
