Arsenal news: William Saliba injury update as fellow defender tipped for Man City transfer

After 19 years without a Premier League title, Arsenal have a chance to finally end their long wait under Mikel Arteta this May.

The Gunners are eight points clear of champions Manchester City at the top of the table having played a game more. There is still a long way to go in the title race - with Arsenal still to play Man City, Newcastle and Chelsea - but Arteta is confident of success.

Yet if Arsenal are to be triumphant, they will need their best players to be fit. Arteta has received some worrying injury news ahead of Sunday afternoon's crucial fixture against Liverpool at Anfield. With that in mind, here are the latest headlines from the Emirates.

Saliba out of Liverpool game

William Saliba is not expected to be fit in time for the game against Liverpool. The France international has missed Arsenal's last two Premier League outings against Crystal Palace and Leeds with a back injury, which is still causing him a problem.

Rob Holding is set to continue to deputise for Saliba, with Arteta unwilling to take any risks ahead of the run in. Without question, Saliba has been one of the Premier League's breakthrough stars this season and is quickly establishing himself as a Gunners icon.

Wilshere on Arteta influence

Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has admitted he's rekindled his love for football since becoming the club's U18 coach. The ex-midfielder retired from playing at the end of last season to join Arsenal's coaching staff, a role that he's thriving in.

Wilshere's side have reached the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup, with a tricky tie against Man City - of all clubs - on the horizon. The former England international would put himself firmly on the managerial radar if Arsenal were to win that competition.

Wilshere told the Daily Mail, "It’s given me back the real deep love for football. And I didn’t know I’d lost it, to be honest. I came back here last year - I was coaching a bit, training a bit. Then I had a decision to make."

On Arteta, he added, "He’s a really intelligent coach, but he also knows how to motivate people. When you have a connection with your players like Mikel does - and you can see that he really cares - players buy into that and they’ll do anything you want really. You can tell them to build with three at the back or four at the back, but it’s deeper than that."

Tierney tipped for Man City move

Andy Cole believes Man City should swoop for Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney. The Scotland international has started just four Premier League games this season following the arrival of fellow left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko last summer.

Cole told King Casino Bonus, "I like Kieran Tierney, he's had a few problems with injuries but he is talented. If Arsenal are prepared to sell him, he would not be struggling for options.

"If Manchester City are in for him, I could see that working, but he'd be competing with Ben Chilwell who is linked to Manchester City too. Tierney will want to play, and if he doesn't continue to get any game time, he'll be looking to go somewhere else in the summer.

"If you look at Tierney's situation previously, you have to ask what did he actually do wrong? He's never let Arsenal or Mikel Arteta down, of course he's had a few injuries but he's always played well. He's a kid with a brilliant attitude.

"If he sees a chance to get more game time I'm sure he'll put his head down and work for it, but I would not be surprised if he took the option to move on and play more."
