Arsenal news: Mikel Arteta slammed for Man Utd decision as Nuno Tavares vents frustration

It's an exciting time to be an Arsenal fan, with the feel-good factor well and truly back at the Emirates.

Five summer signings and nearly £120million spent, Mikel Arteta has been backed by the Gunners board and technical director Edu has handed him the tools for an improved campaign after bitterly missing out on the Champions League last season.

Arsenal certainly started the 2022-23 Premier League season with intent, winning their first five games - until a trip to Manchester. There, the Gunners' perfect start to the new term was ended, leaving Arteta's side with the bitter taste of defeat before their Europa League campaign kicks off on Thursday. It's a trip to Zurich on the agenda before the visit of Everton back in domestic action on Sunday.

Here's a round-up of the latest news from the Emirates.

Miserable day in Manchester

Starting at Old Trafford, it was an afternoon forget for Mikel Arteta's men. Arsenal lost 3-1 to Manchester United - and in controversial circumstances. The Gunners thought they'd taken the lead when Gabriel Martinelli slotted home after only 11 minutes, only for a VAR check to rule the goal out.

Then struck United's £85million new signing, Antony, who beat Aaron Ramsdale late in the first half. Bukayo Sako 's equaliser was then ruled a consolation after Marcus Rashford scored twice, condemning Arteta and co to their first Premier League defeat of the season which ended their 100 per cent start.

Here are five talking points.

Arteta blamed for decision

To add insult to injury for Mikel Arteta, Gary Neville and Paul Merson believe that he's to blame for the defeat in Manchester. Having made a triple substitution after Marcus Rashford's first goal to make Arsenal more attacking - and subsequently more open - the Gunners quickly conceded again and the game went out of sight.

Neville stated on Sky Sports post-match: "The three substitutions at once, I thought it was strange, because it was a bit of kitchen-sink job which you can get done on the counter-attack - which they did." And Merson agreed by adding: "For me, it was a knee-jerk reaction with 20 minutes to go."

Tavares vents loan frustration

Nuno Tavares has hit out at Arsenal for not including an option to buy in his loan deal at Marseille. The Portuguese left-back, 22, will spend the remainder of this season with the Ligue 1 giants and has made made a positive start to life in the south of France, despite his frustration with the Gunners.

Speaking to RMC Sport, Tavares claimed: "At Arsenal, I do not know if it was a problem of competition with Kieran Tierney, but for me, that's not even the point. I came to Marseille to finally be able to play in my position. When signing with OM, I wanted to have an option to buy, but Arsenal refused. With my agents, we always wanted this purchase option, but Arsenal didn't.
