Arsenal news: Mikel Arteta faces transfer exodus as boss hails league's youngest squad

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal side will be under even more pressure to make the Premier League's top four come the end of the season as failure to qualify for next season's Champion's League could see them lose some of their best players.

The Gunners have fought their way into contention for the qualification places for next season's competition but trimmed down their squad while failing to add new faces during the January transfer window.

Experienced names such as ex-captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Calum Chambers and Sead Kolasinac were some of the players to depart, but Arteta will not be troubled by the young age of the squad he now has.

One of the names said to be attracting potential interest is Bukayo Saka as his suitors have been revealed.

And Jack Wilshere has revealed why he hasn't signed a contract with Arsenal yet despite training with the club for most of the season.

Here are Mirror Football's latest Arsenal headlines.

Wilshere's admission

Jack Wilshere has revealed he remains a free agent and hasn't rejoined boyhood club Arsenal because Mikel Arteta "doesn't want" him.

Former England star Wilshere has been training with Arteta's side for several months while he looks for a new club after his release by Bournemouth last season.

Arteta has previously spoken about Wilshere's future and insisted the midfielder should be looking for a club that can offer him first-team football.

And Wilshere himself has now opened up on his current situation with the Gunners.

Arteta hails young squad

Mikel Arteta is proud of Arsenal's youthful side – but knows their greatest asset may also prove to be the club's undoing this season.

With the club's season now riding on Arteta's ability to secure Champions League football next season, Arteta has very little experience of handling the Premier League run-in to turn to.

Arsenal's starting XI for January's goalless draw against Burnley had an average age of just 23.8 years and now the transfer window has closed the Gunners boss will have to squeeze all he can out of the resources at his disposal until the end of the season.

But he hasn't been put off by the challenge, as the Arsenal boss opened up on his "high" goals for his team.

Saka transfer situation emerges

The pressure on Arteta and his Arsenal side to secure Champions League football will also be high with the club knowing certain players may seek to leave if a top-four finish is not secured.

One of the players being linked with a move away is Bukayo Saka, with Manchester City and Liverpool said to be keeping tabs on the England winger's situation.

And after the club missed out on the January signing of Dusan Vlahovic, who ended up signing for Juventus, Arteta will know his summer transfer plans will hinge on the coming months.
