Arsenal news: Major Barcelona transfer problem emerges as Lucas Torreira continues to impress

Here is your Arsenal morning digest on Monday, March 21.

Sergi Roberto set for Atletico Madrid move

Arsenal face a considerable problem in their reported pursuit of Barcelona utility man Sergi Roberto. According to Sport, the Spaniard has an offer from Atletico Madrid and looks likely to seal a switch to the Wanda Metropolitano.

The La Masia graduate is out of contract at the end of the season and it was previously reported the Gunners were interested in making a move for his services. He of course would be available on a free transfer.

However, it seems unlikely that Arsenal will be able to take advantage of that fact with the news that a move to Atletico Madrid could be on the cards.

Gunners explore Philippe Coutinho move

Whilst Mikel Arteta looks set to be left frustrated in his efforts to bring one Barcelona player to the Emirates Stadium ahead of next season, it appears their prospects are more positive regarding Philippe Coutinho. According to reports, the Gunners are exploring the option of swooping for his services once his loan spell with Premier League rivals Aston Villa expires.

As it stands, Villa have a £33m option to make his switch to the Midlands permanent so that could cause a problem for Arsenal. Coutinho’s performances since his winter arrival have been hugely impressive though.

Torreira receives plenty of praise after consecutive strikes

Lucas Torreira appears set to wave goodbye to Arsenal, with Fiorentina looking likely to make an effort to sign him on a permanent basis. He has scored in back-to-back games for the Serie A club and has received praise from former La Viola star Domenico Caso.

Speaking with Tuttomercatoweb, he said: “Torreira? I’m not surprised.

“The player we saw at Arsenal and Samp, despite his physical size, always showed great tactical intelligence and the ability to be a leader in the middle of the field.

“He left Italy perhaps to get some satisfaction, but he’s not a discovery for us; he had already shown his value.”
