Arsenal news: Joao Cancelo alternative emerges after first bid and Stan Kroenke demand

Arsenal might have admitted defeat in their Premier League title fight with Manchester City, but Mikel Arteta remains more determined than ever to bring the glory days back to the Emirates.

The Gunners could be confirmed as runners-up this weekend and with their campaign close to wrapping up, club chiefs are pivoting their focus towards the upcoming summer transfer window which officially opens on Saturday, June 10. But as many teams across the world will be doing, Arteta and co are already laying the groundwork.

Star names and more niche targets have been shortlisted, with Arsenal planning to offload a host of players in order to make room for new arrivals. Declan Rice is the Gunners' top priority, but another big name from a Premier League rival may follow him to North London.

Here's a round-up of the latest news from the Emirates.

Cancelo alternative emerges

Arsenal could reignite their interest in Spanish prospect Ivan Fresneda if Manchester City block them from signing Joao Cancelo. The Gunners launched a £13million bid for Fresneda, 18, during the January transfer window but the full-back opted to remain with Real Valladolid.

The Telegraph report that Arsenal are still monitoring Fresneda's progress and could make a follow-up offer should City decide to stop them signing Cancelo. The Portuguese, 28, is unlikely to remain with Bayern Munich on a permanent basis and after falling out with Pep Guardiola, he's set to leave the Etihad this summer.

Kroenke sent transfer demand

Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke has been told that he needs to spend more than £250m this summer in order to ensure that the Gunners' progress doesn't go to waste. Simon Jordan, ex-owner of Crystal Palace, wrote his column for the Daily Mail: "To be able to even get a waft of wrestling this Premier League away from City, I think we're talking £250m-plus on new players but it has to be spent well.

"They need centre forwards, centre backs and central midfielders and need to ensure William Saliba's contract is extended beyond the year he has left. They need to find upgrades wherever they can and Arteta must be forensic, ruthless and honest."

Gunners recognised by Premier League

Three Arsenal players and Mikel Arteta have been nominated among the Premier League's end-of-season awards. Arteta is up for manager of the year, while Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard will compete with the likes of Erling Haaland and Marcus Rashford for player of the year.

Meanwhile, in the young player of the year category, Saka and Odegaard have been joined by Gabriel Martinelli. Haaland is again in there and the favourite.
