Arsenal news: Harry Kane's Gunners past laid bare as asking price set for striker

Arsenal were dealt no favours by Leicester City on Saturday, with Manchester City making light work of the Foxes to put the pressure back on the Gunners in the title race.

An early goal from John Stones and two from Erling Haaland put Pep Guardiola's challengers in control before half-time, allowing the manager to rest some of his first-teamers after the break. Former City frontman Kelechi Iheanacho pulled one back for the visitors, but it wasn't enough.

That result means the focus is back on Mikel Arteta's league leaders, who travel to West Ham on Sunday. Here are the latest lines from around North London.

Kane's childhood love for Arsenal

Harry Kane is well and truly a Tottenham Hotspur man these days, but there was a time when he was desperate to represent Arsenal. So much so, it has been claimed, that a 12-year-old Kane was prepared to go in goal for the club.

“When I see Harry now I can’t help but to think back to when he was a starry-eyed 12-year-old, sat with his mum and dad in my office as I told him he wasn’t quite up to the standard we were looking for,” the Gunners' former assistant academy manager Roy Massey told Mirror Football. “That was the hardest part of the job, telling lads that Arsenal were letting them go.

“Next thing, Harry’s dad came back in and told me he now wants to be a goalkeeper - and I thought the least I could do was to send him to work with our ‘keeper coach Alex Welch.

“Alex was one of the best in the business and after just a few sessions he told me ‘Roy, the lad is never going to make the grade in goal’ so this time Harry had to move on. I know how much it hurt him. Some lads are lost to the game forever because they can’t get over the disappointment."

Keown recalls police encounter

Martin Keown was part of more than one successful Arsenal squad (Press Association)

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has recalled an occasion when police attempted to arrest two Gunners players. The pundit, who was part of multiple title-winning squads, detailed the dramatic events around a league game against Coventry City in Arsene Wenger's first season as manager.

"It was one of those when at half-time, [Arsenal managing director] Ken Friar came in and said 'there's a problem," Keown told talkSPORT. "The police want to arrest two Arsenal players'.

"So the boss (Wenger) said, 'Ken, sort it out, ridiculous.' I think a couple of our players got involved in a few squirms with the Coventry players. I think Ian Wright was involved and [Coventry's Gary] McAllister. We ended up with that 'get the kettle on' shout because Wrighty was always in trouble so I came up with this saying where we just got close to him."

Arsenal are prepared to sell in-form striker Folarin Balogun, but are believed to want £26m for his services, according to L'Equipe. The youngster has yet to make a significant impact in England, but is in fine goalscoring form on loan at Reims in Ligue 1.

AC Milan and Marseille are among the sides interested in the youngster, who is eligible to play international football for England or the United States. The 21-year-old has seven goals in 13 England under-21 outings, but was born in the United States and could yet switch allegiances.

His 18 Reims goals this season have helped Will Still's side recover from a slow start to sit firmly in mid-table in the French top tier. Only three players - Kylian Mbappe, Jonathan David and former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette - have scored more in the competition.
