Fabio Vieira was given a golden opportunity to stake his claim for Arsenal last night. However, with his namesake, Gunners legend Patrick, watching from the stands, he failed to deliver when Mikel Arteta needed him most.
At 22, Vieira is no spring chicken. There is obvious room for improvement at that age but this was no academy player being drafted in to replace Granit Xhaka, who missed the clash due to illness.
The Portuguese midfielder made just his third Premier League start of the season in the 3-3 draw against Southampton as he continues to adjust to the rigours of English football. On yesterday’s showing, it is clear he remains some way from the finished article.

One fan tweeted post-match: “Is Vieira cut out for this level? Because he hasn't looked at it so far. Too weak and not composed enough on the ball.”
Xhaka’s absence was felt as Arsenal lacked bite in midfield alongside Thomas Partey. Vieira, unquestionably, has talent and, like fellow diminutive compatriots such as Bernardo Silva, may need a year or so to adapt - but the Gunners need somebody for the here and now.
Recent reports have linked Arsenal with unsettled Chelsea star Mason Mount. Signing a midfielder is understood to be a priority this summer and the Blues man could be available for a cut-price fee.
A lavish transfer policy at Stamford Bridge has hindered Mount’s game time at Stamford Bridge in the second half of 2022-23. With 14 months left on his contract, questions over his future have plagued Chelsea’s season and Liverpool are also reportedly expressing interest.
Todd Boehly and Co will be looking to trim the fat on an overpopulated Blues squad - and that could play into Arsenal’s hands. As a seasoned England international, Mount would not require any time to ease into Premier League life.
His versatility also makes him an enticing target for Arteta. While the 24-year-old has played in the “half-space” position just off the right flank this season, he can also play in midfield or as a number ten.
For Arsenal, Mount would be suited to playing on the left of a midfield three - the role Vieira stepped in for Xhaka against Southampton. The Gunners are also linked with his best friend and England teammate Declan Rice, a player with a far heftier price tag.
Figures of around £100million are being quoted for the West Ham United general but he would also add some much-needed steel to the Gunners' engine room. Whether the title ends up at the Emirates or not, this season’s success has made Arsenal an attractive destination when top Premier League players become available.
