Arsenal move for Tino Livramento takes a step closer following Newcastle talks: report

Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento.

Mikel Arteta’s pursuit of Tino Livramento has taken a positive turn after a recent report revealed Newcastle may move for his potential replacement.

Arsenal’s chances of seeing Tino Livramento at the Emirates has increased with Newcastle monitoring Sporting Lisbon fullback Ivan Fresneda.

The Magpies face competition from Arsenal, presumably in the event that Livramento commits to Newcastle, and also from Manchester City.

Newcastle move for Sporting Lisbon fullback paints a positive picture for Arsenal

Newcastle, while reluctant to lose England international Tino Livramento, have seen their fullback become the target of title contenders Arsenal.

According to a report from The Telegraph, Livramento is yet to signal to the Magpies that he wishes to stay with the club, and the Metro revealed that Newcastle have set a £60 million asking price for the player.

Eddie Howe’s side are now in concrete talks to sign Sporting Lisbon fullback Ivan Fresneda, with the Portuguese side already receiving multiple proposals for his signature.

The Spaniard, signed for €9 million from Real Valladolid in 2023, is expected to deliver a strong profit with this move, and his release clause currently sits at €80 million.

While the reigning Primeira Liga champions don’t expect to receive the price of his clause, claims from local journalist Flavio Costa have revealed that Newcastle are considering a deal in the region of €30 million, a lower fee that Sporting Lisbon are open to.

Interest in the 21-year-old has skyrocketed following his Champions League displays this season, notably covering 11km and recording nine defensive contributions in his side’s 2-1 victory over reigning champions PSG.

Fresneda, who won’t be available for this evening’s quarter-final clash against Arsenal, is attracting attention from other Premier League clubs, including tonight’s opposition, leaving Newcastle with a quick decision to make.

In the event of a move, Arsenal’s position in their pursuit of Tino Livramento, who ranked at No.9 in FourFourTwo's list of the best right-backs in the world, would get dramatically stronger, with a replacement for the fullback already tied down.

Livramento has made 78 appearances for Newcastle United in the Premier League and was called up to the England senior squad for multiple UEFA Nations League matches in late 2024.

The Englishman, who was selected for the Team of the Tournament in England’s victory at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship last year, is viewed by Mikel Arteta as a player of high enough calibre to join the title-contending makeup of their squad and increase internal competition.
