Hearts manager Derek McInnes has confirmed transfer talks have taken place with Arsenal over the signing of James Wilson.

As reported by Standard Sport earlier, the Gunners are exploring a deal to sign the Scotland international on loan for the rest of the season with the view to pursuing a permanent move in the summer.

Wilson would join up with the Gunners’ academy rather than the first-team squad.

Tottenham have also been credited with interest elsewhere, but McInnes says not discussions have taken place with Arsenal's north London rivals.

Asked for an update on Deadline Day, McInnes told Sky Sports: "There was conversation with Arsenal yesterday.

"They called and spoke to Graham [Jones, sporting director], but there's been nothing since from Arsenal in any deal.

"I don't know about Tottenham. I heard [about interest from ] Tottenham, but Tottenham have no discussions with us directly. Graham Jones to deal with that.

"But I think any players going out would have to be a benefit to the club."

He added: "He is a young player and he's been restricted for minutes this season. It's tough to get in the first team at his age. James had a bit more exposure last season, but he's such a good kid, he trains well.

"Would we see the benefit of a loan? Potentially, yes, if he gets some minutes, but this one was a wee bit of out left-field. It that came yesterday from Arsenal's development squad.

"We've heard nothing back from Arsenal today, so I don't know where that would be, but if James is still here in the building when the window shuts, great, and we just work with them, as we have done, to try and find the best solution for them, and hopefully get in our team and play a part in the run-in."
