Arsenal have added Gabriel Jesus to their short list of injury concerns.
It was generally a weekend of good news for the Gunners, who welcomed Jurrien Timber back to the XI for his first Premier League start since suffering a serious knee on the opening day of last season.
But it emerged that Brazilian striker Jesus was ruled out of the trip to Aston Villa on the morning of the game, which they ultimately won 2-0.
Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney are also nursing injuries while Fabio Vieira has returned from a hip issue in time to join Porto on loan.
Here is the latest Arsenal injury news and return dates...
Gabriel Jesus
The Gunners are waiting on the results of a scan on Jesus’ groin injury.
The striker picked up the injury in training on Thursday and Arteta said post-game: “Just at the end he felt something in his groin.
“We’ll need to assess him. We need to have an MRI scan to see, but he wasn’t available for the game.
“We have to see [how long he will be out]. Probably tomorrow or Monday we’ll have the results to see if it’s a matter of days or weeks. We don’t know.”
Potential return date: August 31, vs Brighton
Takehiro Tomiyasu
Defender Tomiyasu is another who has struggled with fitness in recent months, and is currently nursing a knee injury.
Speaking after the win over Lyon, Arteta ruled the Japan international out until next month at the earliest, telling reporters: “I think it will take weeks on that one, unfortunately, and poor Tomi because of everything that he does.
“But he’s going to have to be patient and work through it because I think it’s going to take a few weeks.”
Asked for an update earlier this month, Arteta reiterated that Tomiyasu is still “a few weeks” away from first-team action.
Potential return date: September/October 2024
Kieran Tierney
Tierney’s future at Arsenal appears bleak, having been shipped out on loan to Real Sociedad last season and returning after Euro 2024 with a hamstring injury.
Amid speculation linking Tierney with another move this summer, Arteta wants the left-back to focus on his fitness.
He told reporters earlier this month: "He needs to focus on recovering in the best possible way, it’s been a tough time for him again with the last injury. We have to try to support him and make sure he gets back fit."
