Arsenal icon Thierry Henry ruins Tottenham with brutal commentary on late Sporting goal

Thierry Henry enjoyed his punditry job more than usual on Tuesday night after Tottenham suffered defeat against Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League.

Spurs were beaten 2-0 in Portugal as two late goals saw them slump to their first loss of the season under Antonio Conte. Paulinho headed in a corner at the near post in the 91st minute to put the hosts ahead before Arthur Gomes produced a brilliant solo run to make the three points safe a few minutes later.

It was a chastening night for Spurs, who had plenty of good chances through Richarlison but failed to make their dominance count. To make matters worse for Tottenham fans, their defeat was commentated on by Arsenal legend Henry.

Working for CBS Sports, Henry had to be prompted to stop laughing by his punditry colleague Jamie Carragher as the panel was re-watching Arthur’s brilliant run and finish. “No, Thierry, stop laughing,” said Carragher. “You are laughing. You are enjoying this.”

Henry responded: “I am not laughing. No, I am not [enjoying it]. Put the camera on me. I screamed because of the meg (for Arthur’s goal). Woooh. Blimey. Wow.”

Carragher then joked: “An unmissable moment. Do you see the way he celebrated that goal for Lisbon?” Henry added on the goal, which saw the Sporting substitute nutmeg Emerson Royal before shooting underneath Hugo Lloris: “No, that goal, I don’t care if it was against Spurs. Look at that step over, meg, see you later. Hugo, meg, see you later. 2-0. Bye!”

Carragher concluded: “It was a really good game, it’s a bitter blow for Spurs, but it just goes to show how important set-pieces are and then they just go and confined the misery of Tottenham, and the joy of Thierry Henry.”

Although disappointed to return home with his first defeat of the campaign, Conte was full of praise for Sporting. “You can tell that maybe the players of Sporting Lisbon were really focused until the end,” he said.

“In my opinion, in the second half they suffered a lot to be strong, to be a team and then they have taken the opportunity to win the game.

“It's a big compliment for them because during the game you know very well that there are moments when you have to suffer and the most important thing is to suffer together. At the same time they were good to take a moment to try to win the game. That happened in the final minutes and for this reason they deserved to win.”

Tottenham will now turn their attention to Leicester City, with the Premier League ’s bottom side visiting north London for Saturday’s late kick-off. The Foxes are without a win from their opening six matches, while Spurs are third, a point behind leaders Arsenal.
