Arsenal legend Ian Wright posted a cheeky Twitter dig at Wolverhampton Wanderers following Thursday’s dramatic victory, having slammed the visitors’ time-wasting at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners secured a late three points in north London as Alexandre Lacazette ’s drive was deflected into his own net by Wolves stopper Jose Sa after Nicolas Pepe had cancelled out Hwang-Hee Chan’s opener.
The goal triggered wild celebrations at the Emirates Stadium both on the pitch and in the stands - with the three points representing a huge boost to Arsenal ’s hopes of returning to the Champions League next term.
One man who was certainly revelling in the win was Gunners icon Ian Wright, who posted a number of things throughout the evening that Arsenal supporters will love to have seen.
After the full-time whistle at the Emirates Stadium, the former striker posted a simple selfie of himself with a wide grin on his face. Lacking a caption, it was left up to the imagination to decide what the 58-year-old was thinking.
However, he then gave an insight into his emotions with a brutal verdict on Wolves' display and in the end Arsenal’s victory.
Speaking during DAZN’s coverage of the match, he said: “Wolves were wasting time, I don’t want to sound all sour and that.
“But I am quite pleased that happened in the end when you get one that late. I think we did deserve that because they were trying to waste time.”
When questioned as to why he thought Wolves were attempting to run the clock down, Wright continued: “Because they were trying to hold onto the game. You look at the way Wolves were playing, with the players they have got. They brought Neto on. Podence had to go off. They weren’t trying to have a go at Arsenal. They were sat back.”
Last night’s verdict is certainly not the first time that Wright has attempted to poke a bit of fun at Wolves’ expense. The former Arsenal man was also hugely active on social media following the Gunners’ slender win at Molineux earlier this month.
Having been slammed by Ruben Neves for their celebrations in the Black Country, Wright again took to social media, whilst also criticising the Portuguese for his comments.
Speaking on the Wrighty’s House podcast, he said: “I was vexed with Neves, coming out and saying ‘look at how Arsenal are celebrating’.
“What’s wrong with you?
“That’s an unbelievable result for Arsenal the way that you lot have been playing. 1-0 nil down with ten men away from home and we get the goal [win]. That is cause for celebration!”
