Arsenal handed surprise boost ahead of Nottingham Forest showdown

Arsenal have received an injury boost ahead of Sunday's Premier League meeting with Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium.

Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Elneny returned to training on Saturday after missing the last two months of action for the Gunners. He picked up a hamstring injury in the 2-1 win over Fulham in August and has not played since.

Arsenal announced the player's return by tweeting "Look who's back!" as they prepare to welcome the Reds to North London on Sunday (2pm kick-off). He was not expected to return until after the Qatar World Cup, which starts next month.

Elneny's injury has been a source of mystery during his absence. The full extent of it had never been fully disclosed aside from manager Mikel Arteta describing the injury as long-term.

It remains to be seen if he will be involved in any capacity on Sunday afternoon, but his recovery will be a welcome boost for an Arsenal team that has a few injury doubts heading into the game.

Defender Gabriel Magalhaes came on as a second half substitute in Thursday's defeat to PSV Eindhoven and picked up a knock. Though he finished the game, he limped off at half time and was also seen hobbling onto the team bus after the match. He faces a late fitness test.

Versatile left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko has missed the last eight games for Arsenal with a groin injury, but also faces a late fitness test and could be back in time for the weekend. Goalkeeper Matt Turner felt discomfort in his groin during training this week and, even if he is passed fit, will likely only make the bench behind Aaron Ramsdale.

Elsewhere, Emile Smith Rowe has been out since September with a groin issue that required surgery. Brazilian winger Marquinhos missed out in midweek after feeling.

This weekend will be Forest's first trip to the Emirates since 2019, when they were hammered 5-0 by Unai Emery's side. Steve Cooper's men did beat Arteta's team in the most recent meeting of the two sides, however, winning 1-0 in last season's FA Cup third round tie at the City Ground.
