Arsenal given promising initial response to second Lisandro Martinez transfer bid

Arsenal have submitted a second bid for Lisandro Martinez which Ajax are currently mulling over, according to reports.

It comes after the Gunners had an initial offer for the centre-half immediately rejected as they continue to go after defensive reinforcements this summer. Martinez is one of several Ajax stars to be on the radar of Premier League clubs as Manchester United are also keen.

So far the north London outfit have seen a £29m bid turned down out of hand, but have returned with an increased offer which is at least being discussed by Ajax bosses, reports Goal. The 24-year-old is appreciative of the foundation that has been afforded to him in Amsterdam but would like a switch to England's top flight if an agreement can be struck.

The Red Devils are continuing to track Martinez's situation as they consider their own targets. Erik ten Hag has been linked with a host of his former players including Jurrien Timber and Antony. Martinez's versatility is also seen as a major plus.

Ajax though are under no pressure to sell having already raised huge funds this summer through the sales of Sebastien Haller to Borussia Dortmund and Ryan Gravenberch to Bayern Munich. It means they can name their price for the likes of Martinez, Timber and Antony.

Arsenal's backline is already well stocked, but they remain determined to add more quality at the Emirates. Last summer they spent £50m on Ben White whilst 12 months prior to that they added Gabriel from Lille. The pair have formed a partnership at the back, but Martinez remains on their radar.

Mikel Arteta has been willing to play with a three-man backline, although William Saliba is also heading back to north London. Neither Arsenal nor United would be able to offer Martinez Champions League football, but both are hopeful of ending up there in 12 months time.

Arsenal, following a near miss last term, continue to be investing in their squad with a deal for Gabriel Jesus close. A medical is set for Tuesday ahead of a £45m move from Manchester City with Arteta reuniting with a player he knows having been assistant at the Etihad.

Already the Gunners have spent over £30m on adding Fabio Vieira from Porto whilst American goalkeeper Matt Turner recently joined up with the club having signed several months earlier. Arsenal also remain in the market for Leeds United's Raphinha, who they also saw a bid knocked back for recently. The Brazilian is expected to leave Yorkshire this summer but Barcelona are his preferred destination.
