Arsenal get new Bruno Guimaraes transfer boost as Newcastle make move for Lucas Bergvall

Newcastle have made a move for Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall, which could be good news for Arsenal.

After losing out to Premier League rivals Aston Villa for the signing of Switzerland World Cup star Johan Manzambi, Eddie Howe’s side have had to turn their attentions elsewhere in an attempt to bolster their midfield options.

According to the Athletic, Newcastle’s bid of around £46million for Bergvall has been rejected by Spurs - who are open to a sale if they receive a bid they deem suitable.

There is encouragement for the Magpies to return with an improved offer as Tottenham have already spent a combined £185m on midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, pushing the Sweden international even further down the pecking order.

The 20-year-old saw his minutes restricted under Roberto De Zerbi as Spurs avoided relegation from the Premier League, and he has informed the club of his desire to leave and explore new opportunities.

If Bergvall does end up making the move up north, he could be a replacement for Bruno Guimaraes as the Brazil international has been heavily linked with a switch to Arsenal.

The Gunners have already initial talks with Guimaraes’ representatives to gauge his availability, as reported by Standard Sport last month, and those discussions proved positive.

In addition, the 28-year-old has reportedly informed Newcastle of his wish to leave St James’ Park and join the Premier League champions.

However, with the Magpies’ stance of not willing to entertain offers for their captain, widespread reports claim Arsenal will have to pay in the region of £100m to test that resolve.
