Arsenal get Declan Rice clarity after Man City star doubles down on £42m transfer promise

Kalvin Phillips has reiterated his desire to stay at Manchester City beyond the summer transfer window which could complicate any pursuit of Declan Rice. Pep Guardiola's side are interested in bringing Rice to Etihad Stadium but face some obstacles in making a move with Phillips' position in the squad a key one.

The England midfielder was signed from Leeds last summer but injuries have significantly plagued his season resulting in him playing just 595 minutes. Last month, Guardiola hinted that Phillips must make a significant impression soon after a troubling campaign with talks to be held about his future in the summer.

However, the stance from Phillips on his immediate plans has been made very clear. “I came here to win trophies and play football," he told BBC Radio Manchester after winning the Premier League title in May. "I’ve not done as much as I’d like to this season.

“Next pre-season I’ll try and come back as fit as possible and hopefully I can be similar to the likes of Rodri and Gundogan who are very important to the team and undroppable.”

Alongside Phillips' future needing to be discussed, City are closing in on the signing of Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea for £25million after agreeing personal terms at the start of June.

Josko Gvardiol is the next desired target for City but negotiations over a desired fee for RB Leipzig could take some time, with the reported €80million (£68.5m) asking price now much lower than the German clubs current valuation.

Phillips staying and Rice still being signed by City is possible, but the former Leeds man has every intention to fight for his place which could make a move for the West Ham captain unlikely. “My intention is to stay there,” he said after scoring his first England goal in the 7-0 Euro qualifier against North Macedonia. "We have just won the Treble, so there is no reason for me to leave other than if I am not playing [which] I will obviously have to think about it.

“I cannot give it 12 months and say I am not playing so I am going to leave. As you have seen with many players at City, it can take quite a while to cement yourself into the team. Hopefully I will enjoy my off season and then work hard when I get back.”
