Arsenal prepped the announcement of Kai Havertz’s blockbuster transfer whilst the German forward was celebrating the wedding of former teammate Kepa Arrizabalaga alongside a host of Chelsea stars.
The German forward was confirmed as a Gunner on Wednesday evening. He becomes the North London side’s first signing of the summer as they look forward to their return to the Champions League.
Arsenal have agreed to pay £65million for his signature, whilst Havertz puts pen to paper on a long-term contract at the Emirates Stadium. With players currently in the midst of holidays during the off-season, the Gunners were actually forced to announce his arrival in a somewhat unconventional way.
Some fans on social media have pointed to a video that shows a club representative flying to meet Havertz before handing him an Arsenal shirt. The former Bayer Leverkusen star then unfurls the shirt before saying “I am a Gunner”.
Whilst the video itself was not out of the ordinary, fans did notice the location. Havertz has been celebrating alongside a number of his now ex-Chelsea teammates as goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga got married in a glitzy ceremony in Marbella.
Havertz was still on the Spanish island as he underwent the interviews, leaving some fans convinced that he was still at the wedding. One supporter on Twitter wrote: “This is fully at Kepa's wedding nahh.”

Whilst Arsenal tried their best to keep the signing under wraps, Havertz’s first official interview as a Gunner was leaked online, which forced him to pen an emotional statement to Chelsea supporters. Taking to Twitter, he wrote: "Dear @ChelseaFC, I would have preferred for you to hear my thoughts on leaving Chelsea first from myself before my thoughts on me joining my new team.
“This isn’t my style and it upsets me that you had to hear of it in this way. I write this letter with a heavy heart to all the fans.
“A big thank you for all your support, we achieved a dream of winning the Champions League together! Kai.”
Meanwhile, the 24-year-old also risked the wrath of his former team as he shared a pic of himself and Mateo Kovacic decked out in suits, presumably ahead of Kepa’s wedding. It was joined by the caption “we’re ready”.
Elsewhere, new teammate Jorginho also dropped a hint ahead of the move being confirmed. He too shared a picture of the pair on his Instagram story with a series of eye emojis.
Speaking after the move was officially announced, Havertz said: "It's super exciting for me personally. I'm so glad to join this amazing club. This club has such a big history, and I hope we we can achieve lots of things, and I'm just looking forward to meeting all the players, the staff, and yeah, it's going to be exciting."
