Arsenal decision helps secure Kieran Tierney transfer advantage as Joao Cancelo deal is explored

At present, the main topic of discussion with regard to Arsenal transfers are incomings.

That's natural given the summer window officially opened earlier in the week as Gunners supporters await updates on the likes of West Ham United captain Declan Rice, Chelsea forward Kai Havertz and Brighton's impressive midfielder Moises Caicedo among plenty of others.

But whilst it's important for the north London outfit to sign players that can take them to the next level, tough decisions have to be made with regard to those who don't figure into Mikel Arteta's plans for next season and with that said, Friday morning brought about the confirmation of one high-profile exit.

Following a season-long loan spell at Southampton, Ainsley Maitland-Niles' long-tenure at Arsenal has concluded and the versatile midfielder, as things currently stand, is the sole first-team player set to become a free agent when his contract expires at the end of the month.

Other senior players expected to leave this summer include Pablo Mari - whose £5.9million permanent transfer to Monza is in place - Granit Xhaka, Nicolas Pepe, Auston Trusty, Folarin Balogun, Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga as technical director Edu Gaspar looks to raise around £100m through sales.

Kieran Tierney is another name that can be included in this list and during our Q&A session earlier in the week, user: 'tejas1987' was keen to find out what the situation is with the Scotland international and even suggested a current USMNT star as a potential replacement.

"What's the status on Kieran Tierney? If the Scot does leave, who are Arsenal targetting in that area?" the question reads. "In my opinion, Fulham's Antonee Robinson fits the bill."

To which football.london's Chief Arsenal writer Kaya Kaynak responded by revealing that if Tierney does end up leaving - amid links to Newcastle United and Aston Villa - a move for Robinson is unlikely simply because the Fulham defender's style is similar to that of the Arsenal number three.

"Tierney certainly has interest from lots of teams and the most high profile of those is Newcastle. Arsenal are in a strong position though, and with three years left on his contract there is no obligation to sell," Kaynak said. "However, it does seem as though Mikel Arteta is evolving away from players of Tierney's style.

"With that in mind, it wouldn't be surprising to see him move on this summer. Replacement-wise, Arteta will want a left-back who can invert in a similar manner to what Zinchenko does. That's why Kiwior and Tomiyasu have been used at left-back at times this season. Joao Cancelo, Timothy Castagne and Ivan Fresneda all fit that bill. For me I think Robinson is a bit too similar to Tierney to be considered a target, but he's certainly a great player!"
