Arsenal dealt new injury worry as Mikel Arteta makes surprise substitution

Arsenal have been dealt a new injury scare after Jurrien Timber was forced off during the win over Everton.

Timber was one of eight Arsenal players to retain their places in the starting XI from the 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen as Mikel Arteta opted to keep changes to a minimum.

However, the defender’s evening came to an end shortly before half-time at the Emirates Stadium.

The Dutchman had gone down earlier in the half and received treatment from the Arsenal medical staff before attempting to carry on.

Timber was unable to make a full recovery and signalled to the bench for a substitution to be made and he was swiftly replaced by Cristhian Mosquera in a rather surprising change given Ben White was on the bench.

There is yet to be an update on the severity of Timber’s knock, though he could now be a doubt for Arsenal’s next fixture against Leverkusen in the Champions League decider on Tuesday night.

Timber watched on from the sidelines as late goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Max Dowman - becoming the youngest scorer in Premier League history - broke Everton’s resistance late on.

“When we talk about belief and conviction and trying and going and going and being mature and being composed in the moment, it's a really difficult thing to do,” Arteta told reporters.

“I'm really proud of them, the ones that started, the finishers that again made such an impact to help us to win the game, and all the staff and players that were on the bench, living the game with us in that incredible way.

“It was beautiful. This gives you a lot of energy and belief. Let's enjoy this.

“The [supporters] really pushed the team. They were very patient when they had to be patient as well and left the players to make their decisions on the pitch. They were really supportive.”
