Arsenal charged by FA over conduct of players during penalty appeal against Newcastle

Arsenal have been charged by the Football Association over the conduct of their players on Monday night against Newcastle.

The Premier League leaders saw a late penalty appeal turned down late in Monday's 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium, a game which saw nine yellow cards dished out by referee Andy Madley.

Shortly after defender Gabriel went to ground inside the penalty area under pressure from Dan Burn, a cross into the Newcastle box appeared to ricochet against Daryl Murphy's arm.

Desperate protests from Arsenal players followed as head coach Mikel Arteta screamed at the fourth official as he ran up and down the touchline.

After the game, Arteta described both decisions as “scandalous”, telling Sky Sports: “It is not about which one was stronger, we had two penalties. I am not talking about the referee, I am talking about what I saw and that was two scandalous penalties.”

Arsenal's conduct has been deemed unorderly by the FA and have until next Tuesday to respond to the charge. If found guilty, a fine is likely.
