Arsenal can secure bargain £15m transfer ahead of Newcastle for 'Turkish Lionel Messi'

Arsenal are said to be leading the race to sign Fenerbache wonderkid Arda Guler. The 18-year-old talent has been dubbed the 'Turkish Lionel Messi' after enjoying a breakthrough season - scoring six goals and providing seven assists in 35 appearances last term.

football.london understands Arsenal are prioritising a move for West Ham captain Declan Rice, whilst Moises Caicedo is also a target for the Gunners. However, a move for Guler could be sanctioned due to his versatility and ability at such a young age.

On April 10, 2022, Fenerbahce hosted Galatasaray and one banner stood out among all the rest inside the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium. As cited by GOAL, it read: "Arda Guler: The Turkish Messi." The sign was held aloft by a 20-year-old fan who had travelled from London to be at one of the most passionate games anywhere in world football.

Guler signed a two-and-a-half-year-long professional contract with Fenerbahce, on January 13, 2021. At the start of 2022–23 season, Guler was given the number 10 shirt, which has a special meaning for Fenerbahce fans, being the number of club legend Alex de Souza.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the 18-year-old has a €17.5million (£15million) release clause included in his current contract. This could allow Arsenal to secure a bargain transfer for the highly-rated youngster as Arteta looks to reinforce his squad.

Ajax and Newcastle are among the clubs to be linked with Guler, but it seems the Gunners are now leading the race for his signature. According to Turkish-Football and The Guardian writer Emre Sarigul, Arsenal contacted Guler's family, who represent the player, over a potential summer move.

Following his 18th birthday earlier this year, it means he can now move to a club in the UK, as Brexit rules that would have previously prevented a move now longer apply. It is claimed by Sarigul that Guler is keen on a move to a top European club, and a move to either Arsenal or Newcastle would ensure that he has the opportunity of playing Champions League football next season.
