Arsenal and Edu keen on £67m-rated striker to hijack Chelsea transfer plan

Arsenal and technical director Edu face one of the biggest mid-season transfer windows in the club’s recent history. The Gunners find themselves in a surprise Premier League title race with Manchester City but may need to add to Mikel Arteta's squad ahead of an unusually hectic 2023.

The north-Londoners have enjoyed their best start to a Premier League season this term to see Arteta’s side top of the table after 14 games. The Gunners' 2-0 win over Wolves last weekend means the club top the league at Christmas for the first time since 2007 - albeit there being no domestic action due to the World Cup.

So far, Arsenal have been better than Pep Guardiola's side. But that could all change with one or two injuries. City's squad depth is stronger than the Gunners' and the factor could play a huge role come the end of the season in May, hence why it’s no surprise that transfer rumours have intensified as we approach the January transfer window.

It's understood that Edu and Arteta are keen on adding a new midfielder and winger to the current crop of players at the Emirates Stadium. Youri Tielemans, Danilo and Mykhaylo Mudryk are all names that have been largely discussed in recent week as potential incomings but there has been another name thrown into the mix.

AS Roma's Tammy Abraham is a name that has previously been linked to the Gunners after his brilliant maiden campaign in Italy. The England international scored 27 goals in all competitions for Jose Mourinho's side after leaving Chelsea to help them lift their first trophy in 14 years in the Europa Conference League.

However, after scoring only four goals in 20 appearances this season, Abraham could now be on the move. That's according to Italian outlet II Messaggero, who claim Roma could be prepared to sell the striker as early as the winter window.

It's claimed the Gunners remain keen on bringing the striker back to London after he scored 30 goals in 82 appearances for Chelsea. However, if Arteta authorises the deal, they face a difficult situation. Chelsea's £67million buy-back option becomes active in the summer and with the signing of ex-Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang not going to plan yet, it could be a viable option for Todd Boehly at the end of the season.

Despite the link to Abraham, it's unclear whether Arteta will want to add another No.9 to his roster. Gabriel Jesus has adapted to life in the capital very well, despite his recent drought in front of goal, while Eddie Nketiah offers something different off the bench. However, as expected with Jesus' lack of goals, a new striker could be seen as the next step to boost the Gunners' chance of being successful this season.
