Around 90,000 homes in North Lanarkshire will be eligible for life-changing full-fibre broadband connectivity thanks to the transformation of digital infrastructure in the region.
The ground-breaking move enables residential areas in the likes of Wishaw, Motherwell, Airdrie, Coatbridge and Bellshill to access speeds of up to 1Gbps – providing a massive boost in the fight to tackle digital poverty in North Lanarkshire.
As a result of the 15-year contract to overhaul connectivity, awarded earlier this year to Scottish networking and connectivity solutions company Commsworld, the Edinburgh-headquartered business has joined forces with fellow firm Netomnia to deliver change.
Netomnia, based in Tewkesbury, will provide the wholesale fibre broadband which is set to transform lives through creating vastly improved access to the internet that whole neighbourhoods previously did not have.
Council leader Councillor Jim Logue told Lanarkshire Live: “Digital exclusion is a genuine concern and it is vital everyone has access to digital technology and the subsequent benefits it affords to help improve the lives of thousands of people living in North Lanarkshire.
“The work being carried out by Commsworld and Netomnia provides the infrastructure for full-fibre broadband connectivity and marks the start of a new future for our communities, eradicating unequal access to digital technology and opening up endless opportunities for people and the region.”
Jeremy Chelot, CEO at Netomnia, added: “Full-fibre broadband is vital to everyday lives, providing much faster speeds than legacy copper networks and allowing residents and businesses to do everything they need online with ease.
