NEW DELHI: It was August 25, 2021. The city was Bengaluru. Para archer Sheetal Devi’s parents – father Mann Singh and mother Shakti Devi – were eagerly waiting to hear from sports physiotherapist Shrikant Iyengar that their daughter would somewhat be able to lead a normal life with prosthetic arms.
The parents had brought a new pair of bangles to put on Sheetal’s artificial limbs, which she always dreamt of wearing since her childhood. Belonging to Loidhar village in Jammu’s Kishtwar, Sheetal was born with Phocomelia – a rare congenital deformity in which the hands are underdeveloped.
