A man in his 40s has died after ‘presenting a weapon’ at police officers - (PA Archive)

Police officers have shot a man dead in Bedford.

Bedfordshire Police said the incident, involving a man in his 40s, happened on Tuesday morning.

The force said that officers were called to reports of vehicles being damaged in Aylesbury Road, shortly after 10.40pm on Monday.

The man was found “barricaded” inside a property and “making threats”, Bedfordshire Police added.

Specialist armed officers and police negotiators tried to engage with the man over a “number of hours”, the force said.

Nearby residents were also evacuated from their homes.

Shortly after 9.30am on Tuesday, the man “presented a weapon before police fired”.

The force has made a mandatory referral to the police watchdog, which has launched an investigation.
