Armed police response sparked in Newcastle by 'weapon' which turned out to be a toy gun

Armed police descended on the West End of Newcastle following reports of a weapon that turned out to be a toy gun.

Northumbria Police was called to the West Copperas area of Denton Burn after it was said a man was seen in a car who may have been carrying an "offensive weapon" at around 2.15pm on Saturday. ChronicleLive understands that there was a large police presence on Broadwood Road, next to Broadwood Road Primary School.

Officers searched a car and found a gun, which was deemed to just a toy. The occupants of the car were arrested, but released with no further action.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "At 2.15pm on Saturday (March 25) we were alerted by a member of the public who reported they had seen a man in a car in the West Copperas area of Newcastle who may have been in possession of a weapon. Nobody had reported that they had been threatened but officers were deployed to the area as a precaution and carried out a search for the vehicle.

"They went on to locate the car parked up nearby, and inside officers located a prop toy gun. Two suspected occupants of the car were subsequently arrested but later released with no further action to be taken after being given appropriate advice."
