Armed police called to disturbance in West Denton as nearby football club issues statement to dispel 'rumours'

An investigation has been launched after armed police were called to a 'disturbance' in West Denton.

At around 3.45pm on Sunday, June 25, officers received a report of a two-vehicle collision on West Denton Way. Following this, a group of males from the vehicles involved were understood to have made threats to each other but left the area before the police arrived.

Northumbria Police has confirmed that those involved were known to each other and that there is no wider risk to the public. Chronicle Live understands that no weapons were located, and no injuries have been reported.

The force is now carrying out enquiries to establish the full circumstances around the reported incident and has appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “At around 3.45pm on Sunday (June 25) police received a report of a disturbance on West Denton Way in Newcastle.

“Officers attended the scene where it was reported that two cars had been involved in a collision on the street. Following this, a group of males from the vehicles involved were understood to have made threats to each other.

“They have then left the area before police arrival. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the report and locate those involved.

"While enquiries are at an early stage, it is believed that those involved are known to each other and there was no wider risk to the public."

The police reassurance comes after anxious parents attending a tournament at the nearby West Denton Junior Football Club were said to have been left panicked by the incident.

In a statement issued on the West Denton JFC Facebook page on Sunday, the club said that "early shouts mistakenly led people to believe it was an issue on the field."

The statement said: "It has been brought to our attention that there are some rumours going around about events that took place at today's tournament.

"Contrary to the rumours and various Facebook posts, nothing actually occurred on the field itself. There was an incident about 100 yards further down West Denton Way in which two vehicles collided and the occupants fled the scene after some sort of altercation.

"The incident didn't happen on the field, or escalate onto the field, but due to some early shouts that mistakenly lead people to believe it was an issue on the field, panic ensued. After a short period of downtime, our tournament was able to continue and our thanks go to all the teams involved.

"We hope that everyone that was misinformed and unfortunately left early have not suffered emotionally from the rumours and aside from the incident still had an enjoyable day. It did put a little bit of a dampener on the day but so glad we could continue and give the players the finish they deserved.

"Well done to everyone involved and hope to see you all again next year."
